Harvest time

Our son is an expert strawberry picker. He can hear them getting ripe. No need to worry about birds getting them. He gets every one, the moment it ripens.

The only problem is, he eats them. He will share his favorite toy with his sister, he will share his favorite ice cream with his daddy, and he will share his favorite drink with his mommy. He will not share his strawberries, except at gunpoint.

Our strawberry patch is in it's first year of production, so we're not seeing many, but we're tasting even fewer. Hopefully next year we'll have more than he can eat. Otherwise I may need to expand the strawberry patch...

That's a great photograph! We're in our second year with these strawberry plants, and things seem to be coming around not too badly. The bluejays that kept constant watch last year for ripe berries seem to have found better pickin's somewhere else, because the almost-ripe berries I'm waiting on don't have spear holes in them. Yet. Keeping everything crossed on that.

I and my brother both went through that phase as youngsters, but more with raspberries than strawberries. I think we were probably 10 when we finally figured out you could get jam and pies out of them a lot faster if some went into the bucket and actually made it back to the house. Just think how much fun you will have showing him or your grandchildren this cute pic years from now, and it just might ease the pain of not having any berries for yourself.

Our 'bird' problem is morealong the lines of yours (our 2 yr old's nickname is bird)-it took a few days to get her to stop eating the green ones. Now they are in peak season and ripening so fast that even she can't get them all. We just got back from a weeks vacation and I picked almost a quart, then found another pint in the fridge that had been picked that morning-I am researching preserve techniques as I write this!
