Speaking of...

...mimicry...

Well, welcome to entomolgy corner! How ironic is it that the morning after I posted about mimics, I ran across this fly on the wall:



A fly disguised as a bee. Note the side view where the stripes don't go all the way around the abdomen:

I haven't actually researched this carefully, but I think it's called a dronefly.

Where else in the blogosphere can you go to get closeups of flies that look like bees?

Crazy! My sister is taking Insect Biology for her Master's this year. She has to collect 125 species of insects. Isn't that wild? Want to send this little guy her way? She's now accepting deliveries of buglets in tupperware containers.

Sorry, e5 got interested, and it didn't take long for this one to fly away. We can send you houseflies or fruit flies by the bushel though...

There seem to be quite a few flies that mimic bees. I've seen several just in my own backyard. Huh!
